Lesson Plan Format

Each Tilley Adventures in Reading lesson plan uses the same format, for at-a-glance use by teachers, and contains the following components:

Suggested Reading Level
Matching Books to Readers and Basal reading level suggestions are provided. See the equivalency chart provided in ______________ for alternative leveling programs.

Core Concepts/ Vocabulary
Each Tilley Adventures in Reading story focuses on a particular set of vocabulary to know, chosen by theme or by word pattern. High frequency words are also used to complete the text. See also the High Frequency Word List for Grade One Students in ___________________.

Materials
Although Tilley Adventures in Reading can be used in many different ways, a materials list is provided for all activities included in the lesson plan.

Story Synopsis
This section will give teachers a sneak peak regarding plot and themes in each Tilley Adventures in Reading story.

Online Activities
In this section, a thumbnail sketch of each of the three Tilley Adventures in Reading activities will be offered, and a short description given.

Online activities are titled by the type of technology skills students will need to use to complete them: _________________________ (pull down menu activity), _________________________ (keyboarding activity), _________________________ (drag and drop activity)

Pre-Reading Activity
A whole class activity is provided here, to preview and introduce the vocabulary or concepts to be addressed in the Tilley Adventures in Reading story.

Reading Purpose
This section offers a focus question to guide students as they read.

Comprehension Questions
In this section, a short list of suggested comprehension questions are provided to probe each students' understanding of the text they have read in the Tilley Adventures in Reading story.

Bright Ideas
Ideas for extension activities, using easy to find materials, will be provided here.

Printable Resources
This section will provide several printable resources to complement the learning experience of the Tilley Adventures in Reading book read, including a mini book of the story for home reading programs

While not every teacher will use the lesson in its entirety, all components are available to teachers for each story. In this way, the Tilley Adventures in Reading Teacher's Guide can be used, in whole or in part, at the discretion of the teacher, as it best complements the instruction the teacher is already providing.
